A Soviet fairy tale

Ulyana Sergeenko, the butterfly that flaps through our hearts for her beautiful yet theatrical collection is pretty theatrical herself. Hop back on the time wagon with us and see for yourself how her recent spring 2013 couture collection inspired mostly by Gone with the Wind’s Scarlett O Hara (one of her personal style icons) makes you admire her to the point of envy.

The runway looks as well as the movie character seem closely reminiscent of her personal style that include signature full-skirted dresses and glamorous 1950s babushka style (think full skirts, fitted mohair sweaters, and a head scarf tied à la Grace Kelly). She experimented with traditional Russian imagery, and decided to merge the Soviet fairy tale illustrations of her childhood with Civil War era Americana– especifically in homage to Gone with the Wind and even designed a version of Scarlett O’Hara’s famed emerald dress with a Russian twist.

The gory details of Ulyana’s femme fatale like the porcelain buttons nipping up the back of gowns, hand-painted with characters out of Russian nursery rhymes, delicate crocheted embroideries, inset like cameos into sweet silk blouses, wide straw hats by Stephen Jones and cropped aprons enhanced the rural and added a pretty touch.

Here below are images from her Couture 2013 show, followed by a couple more collages bringing about the likeness of Ulayana’s personal style to her collection and inspiration icon, Scarlett O’Hara.
